Synopsis:

Yönetmen Joel Alfonso Vargas, Locarno Film Festivali Geleceğin Leoparı bölümünde En İyi Yönetmen ödülü kazandığı Que te vaya bonito, Rico adlı kısa filmini geliştirerek yaptığı bu filmde, yoksulluk, eğitimsizlik, göçmenlik, yasa dışı da olsa bir çıkış ve geçim arayışı etrafında dönen bir öykü anlatıyor. Aile kavramını, ebeveyn olmanın anlamını, sevgi ve güven ortamı yaratmanın yollarını sorgulayan bir Amerikan bağımsız sineması örneği Mad Bills to Pay.  Annesinin geçindirdiği evde, lise öğrencisi kız kardeşiyle birlikte yaşayan, plajda meşrubat ve çerez satarak, kazandığı parayla da içki ve ot içerek yaşayan 19 yaşındaki Rico’nun 16 yaşındaki Destiny’yi hamile bırakması üzerine sorumluluk alma hamlelerine odaklanıyor. Vargas, Babasının terk ettiği Rico’nun baba olma isteği ve ısrarıyla, annesi ve anneannesinden uzak kalan Destiny’nin korkularını onları yargılamadan anlatıyor. Bronx’ta Dominik kökenlilerin çoğunlukta olduğu Orchard Plajı’nda geçen film, karakterlerinin kimlik olarak arada kalmışlığını mekanın coğrafyası, mimarisi, hayat tarzı ve İngilizce-İspanyolca karışık konuşmalarıyla vurguluyor.

Director Joel Alfonso Vargas, who won the Best Director award in the Leopard of Tomorrow section at the Locarno Film Festival for his short film Que te vaya bonito, Rico, developed it into a feature film which tells a story revolving around poverty, lack of education, migration, and the search for a way out even if it means breaking the law. Mad Bills to Pay is an example of American independent cinema that questions the concept of family, the meaning of parenthood, and the ways to create an environment of love and trust.  It focuses on the attempts of 19-year-old Rico to take responsibility after getting 16-year-old Destiny pregnant. He lives with his high school student sister and mother who takes care of their expenses. He sells soft drinks and snacks on the beach and spends his earnings on alcohol and drugs.  Vargas narrates Rico's desire and insistence on becoming a father, because his father abandoned him, and Destiny's fears of being separated from her mother and grandmother, without making judgements. Set in Orchard Beach in the Bronx, where Dominicans are the majority, the film emphasizes the characters' sense of being caught between identities through the geography, architecture, lifestyle, and their language which is a mixture of English and Spanish.
